Dubai Debt 101: A Beginner’s Guide - True/Slant →
negevrockcity:
While the Muslim world celebrated Eid al-Adha, the tiny emirate of Dubai announced that they were $59 billion in debt. The emirate’s investment arm, Dubai World, further announced that they would extend maturities for six months. As these things go, the fact that a $59 billion government-owned company intimately tied in with HSBC, Barclays, ING, Royal Bank and Lloyds is unable to...

First upset of my life? →
alcaniglia:
Since I started watching Nebraska football in the early 1990s, Nebraska has only beaten a higher-ranked team 9 times[…] Granted, the main reason the Huskers so rarely beat a higher ranked opponent was because the Huskers were usually ranked really high.
Hitler's favorite car makes comeback? →
“It was the best car in the world at the time. Better than the Bugatti, Bentley, Rolls Royce or whatever,” Froehlich told Reuters from his office in Duesseldorf. “It was his favorite car: the one he used most often, which he used for parades.”

labeledbones:
SCRANTON, PA—After nearly six years on the air, NBC’s hit show The Office ended abruptly Thursday when documentary filmmaker Ian Sheffield announced that he and his crew had all the footage of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company’s Scranton branch required for their project.
“In retrospect, we really over-shot this thing by an enormous margin,” said Sheffield, adding that he...
Let’s put it in perspective: In 2007, Nebraska gave up 11 touchdowns to Kansas in a single game. In 2009, Nebraska has given up 12 touchdowns in 11 games. That type of improvement is simply amazing.

The Science of How We See Obama's Skin Color →
newsweek:
The results were striking: while self-described liberals tended to pick the digitally lightened photos of the president, self-described conservative students more frequently picked the darkened images. The more one agrees with a politician, in other words, the lighter his skin tone seems; the less you agree, the darker it becomes.

“$1,000 is very expensive, you know. We only want a simple website with our current contents, and contact form as well. And don’t forget about CMS features. We want to add or edit content on our own. And the picture gallery, we want something that stunning and animated. The header should be animated as well. And our logo seems too old, can you design new logo for our company? But...

“Well, I have worked with a lot of designers in my day and I am of the opinion that if you are confident in your abilities to meet my expectations then being paid at the end would be fine with you. Ultimately you are paid for the end result, right? I shouldn’t have to pay you for ‘making the effort’.”

ohyeahfacts:
Back in ‘93, a columnist for PC Professional named Lisa Holst decided to prove that you could make up anything on the internet and people would believe it.
She did this by making up a set of facts that were utterly ridiculous, the spider myth among them (which itself was taken from a collection of insect folklore that dates back to the 1950s), and unleashing it on the world in the...

Why We Crave Comfort Foods →
Many of these foods are loaded in carbohydrates. During stressful times, our bodies often crave carbohydrates. This is because stress causes our bodies to break down serotonin, a neurotransmitter in our brains that helps to regulate sleep, reduce pain and appetite, and calm nerves. Eating foods high in carbohydrates triggers the body to release insulin, which then allows the brain to produce...
