These turkeys are gorgeous, hardy creatures, developed in Europe and America over hundreds of years and rich in flavor. Though they are the ancestors to the Broad-Breasted White, a sort of made-up breed that arose in the 1960s with the advent of industrial turkey farms (the Broad-Breasted Bronze was mostly abandoned because its dark pinfeathers put off consumers), they bear little resemblance to that now ubiquitous bird in taste or texture.

Today more than 99 percent of turkeys sold in America come from the roughly 270 million raised on factory farms each year. These birds are bred to be so literally broad-breasted that by the time they are 8 weeks old, they are too fat to walk, much less procreate—every Broad-Breasted White on the market is the product of artificial insemination. They are kept in giant barns, given antibiotics to prevent disease, and fed constantly so that they reach maturity in almost half the time it takes a heritage turkey. The result is bland, mushy meat that we have come to equate with tenderness, but in reality processors inject the dressed birds with saline solutions and vegetable oils to improve “mouth feel” and keep the oversize breasts from drying out.
”

-
Julia Reed’s history of the Thanksgiving turkey is like a fine meal.
SCRANTON, PA—After nearly six years on the air, NBC’s hit show The Office ended abruptly Thursday when documentary filmmaker Ian Sheffield announced that he and his crew had all the footage of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company’s Scranton branch required for their project.

“In retrospect, we really over-shot this thing by an enormous margin,” said Sheffield, adding that he likely had more than enough good material after filming a British workplace from 2001 to 2003.

“We would have finished much earlier if one employee or another didn’t insist on being interviewed every three minutes. And I have no idea why we were invited to Jim and Pam’s wedding. All of that stuff is totally unusable.”

Sheffield said that the footage will be drastically cut down and used primarily as B-roll for the planned 90-minute educational film about paper manufacture and production.

Let’s put it in perspective: In 2007, Nebraska gave up 11 touchdowns to Kansas in a single game. In 2009, Nebraska has given up 12 touchdowns in 11 games. That type of improvement is simply amazing.

If the rings were around during early man’s time, not only would they have been almost certainly integral to many of the world’s religions, but many temples, shrines, and other community landmarks would no doubt have been placed differently if not in geographical location then in orientation in their current geography. (Consider the effects this probably would have had on Stonehenge, the Parthenon, and possibly even the layout of Washington, D.C.)

Additionally, people probably would have also built their houses and places of business with this religious context in mind, altering the layout of streets and changing the appearance of entire towns and cities.

The photo in this series where this looks most out of place and would probably have changed either the way the structure was built or where the photographer stood when taking the picture is Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

A very neat idea and a whole lot for a Connectedness to think about.

WTF…there was no damage to his truck at all!

did you call the cops at all yesterday?

yeah but they didnt file a report bc he wasnt there..neither were any witnesses…but but!! I called the guy and pretended as though I didnt hear from gieco…and just said hey…im willing to take you up on your offer of paying it out of pocket. And i video recorded the speaker phone conversation…number clear as day on the screen of my phone. So I hope that counts as admitting to guilt…im bout to get in touch with his insurance company

oh btw..he said yes…get him 2 estimates…

why the hell wasn’t he there? and they still could have filed a report and they still SHOULD have. ESPECIALLY if he wasn’t there, that makes it a hit and run.

either way, speak with your insurance IMMEDIATELY. Let them know what is going down.
